Additional Logwatch Scripting for Postfix and Amavis

20th June 2007 Email,Systems 0 Comments
First thing in the morning I like to have a quick browse through the Logwatch output for all my servers (or at the very least the ones I know are critical / the ones that have been giving me trouble) and for the most part the data is always quite concise and extremely useful. However there comes a point when erroneous activity makes your 15kb / 30kb Logwatch email start creeping up towards the 500kb / 700kb sort of size and usually its junk. The best way to sort this is by adding additional scripts/configuration to your standard Logwatch setup. I was finding that the main culprits were ...

Fedora 7 Related Link Dump

3rd June 2007 NAMOS,Systems 0 Comments
How to get your MP3's playing The 'Perfect' Fedora 7 setup (I wouldn't totally agree but hey) As always my NVidia 6600GT caused problems and in order to utilize the graphical setup I had to add vga=791 to the initial command line arguments for setup. With that done and following Mauriat Miranda's steps for installing the NVidia drivers I had dual screen back up in minutes. NTFS-3G was installed by default which was nice. Despite the previous warning someone has successfully migrated from Fedora Core 6 to Fedora 7 via Yum Although I love the new shininess there was one little ...

Linux Temperature Monitoring for Compaq DL380 G1′s, Dell PowerEdges & Asus A7N8X

29th May 2007 NAMOS,Systems 0 Comments
With the summer fast approaching I've noticed that the temperatures in the Server room have been increasing. I've yet to turn the AirCon units on as that would use way more power than I'm prepared to use when the weather is still mild. All that aside I thought it best to start monitoring temperatures across some of the more critical servers in the rack. I'll start off with the Generation 1 Proliant DL380's as these have the Proliant Support Pack installed which provides a very nice web interface to monitor stuff with but also adds an additional SNMP agent to the system allowing you to grab ...

Caching Yum Package Updates to Simulate the Bandwidth Benefits of RHN Satellites

18th May 2007 Datacenter,Networks,Systems 0 Comments
This months updates have meant that a lot of my servers now have outdated packages. Bandwidth isn't really too much of problem when it comes to my RHEL servers as they sit on 100mbit connections in Telehouse and Texas, however all my home and office based CentOS servers sit on a mixture of 2Mbit SDSL, 20Mbit Cable and 8Mb ADSL connections. Thats not really a lot of bandwidth for what could be a couple of gigs of data, especially when you consider that most of these lines sit at around 80% capacity (I know I know, don't ask....). For those SysAdmins with hundreds of servers in a datacenter ...
