Fedora 7 Released!

31st May 2007 Systems 0 Comments
Not really a NAMOS sort of a post but it has to be done! Fedora FAQ Fedora Release Notes Fedora Torrents Some wise words about issuing a 'yum upgrade' I'll be upgrading as soon as the DVD is down and I hope lots of others do too. ...

Linux Temperature Monitoring for Compaq DL380 G1′s, Dell PowerEdges & Asus A7N8X

29th May 2007 NAMOS,Systems 0 Comments
With the summer fast approaching I've noticed that the temperatures in the Server room have been increasing. I've yet to turn the AirCon units on as that would use way more power than I'm prepared to use when the weather is still mild. All that aside I thought it best to start monitoring temperatures across some of the more critical servers in the rack. I'll start off with the Generation 1 Proliant DL380's as these have the Proliant Support Pack installed which provides a very nice web interface to monitor stuff with but also adds an additional SNMP agent to the system allowing you to grab ...

Asterisk ‘Ring All Phones’ – One Approach

23rd May 2007 Asterisk,VOIP 0 Comments
When I setup an Asterisk system for my home telephony it was configured so that if the main phone didn't pickup after a certain amount of time then Asterisk would proceed to 'call' all the phones in the house. Yesterday someone enquired as to how this is acheived because there appears to be some confusion as to how it is done. Now I make no assertions as to whether this is the best way to do it but it works. Extensions.conf [globals] Office1=SIP/200 LivingRoom=SIP/201 ServerRoom=SIP/202 All=SIP/Office1&SIP/LivingRoom&SIP/ServerRoom With that done you then simply add the ...

Link Dump – May 21st

21st May 2007 NAMOS 0 Comments
This self made rack cabinet reminded me of the days of ONIMOS and I quote: "Where else would you find a switch and server racked up with a piece of 2x4, an ADSL modem dangling from a coathanger rail by its power cable, a £600 Wireless Access Point secured to a wall with masking tape." mon.itor.us is a great (and free!) site monitoring product. It should have been in the previous Link Dump but somehow escaped. Fed up with Exchange? Have a look at Scalix. In their words; Scalix provides enterprise Linux email and calendaring in an easy to manage, highly reliable, and feature-rich ...

Caching Yum Package Updates to Simulate the Bandwidth Benefits of RHN Satellites

18th May 2007 Datacenter,Networks,Systems 0 Comments
This months updates have meant that a lot of my servers now have outdated packages. Bandwidth isn't really too much of problem when it comes to my RHEL servers as they sit on 100mbit connections in Telehouse and Texas, however all my home and office based CentOS servers sit on a mixture of 2Mbit SDSL, 20Mbit Cable and 8Mb ADSL connections. Thats not really a lot of bandwidth for what could be a couple of gigs of data, especially when you consider that most of these lines sit at around 80% capacity (I know I know, don't ask....). For those SysAdmins with hundreds of servers in a datacenter ...

Link Dump May 16th 2007

16th May 2007 NAMOS 0 Comments
This link dump is geared towards stuff that made today a hell of a lot easier to get through: Splunk is software that indexes and allows you to search all your server logs from any application in real time. MRTG which was originally for Routers (Hence Multi Router Traffic Graph) can be an invaluable tool for monitoring what has been happening. MonYog is an excellent tool that allows you to write SQL statements as if you were at the console but with the added benefit of GUI tools and shortcuts to features and regularly performed actions. Caffeine - Enough said Putty shouldn't need any ...

Free WiFi and What People Do With It

10th May 2007 Networks 0 Comments
Anyone travelling through Reading may have at some point seen the unsecured wireless network called NAMOS. Well thats me. The Network isn't totally insecure, the Access Points sit behind a Juniper NS5GT and all web / IM / mail is piped through a BlueCoat Security Appliance. I noticed that the client stats were increasing and I was wondering what people were doing with the system. As indicated earlier a Firewall and Security appliance sits between the wireless and my Internet router, the Firewall only allows Web, IM and IMAP/POP3 through. So I was thinking what would these people would ...

NetworksAreMadeOfString

1st May 2007 NAMOS 0 Comments
I was at a loss of what to do with this domain and it occured to me that the site that spawned this domain OurNetworkIsMadeOfString used to be a sort of blog. To be more precise I guess it could be described as a chronicle of the things we did whilst I was at Uni. Checking the old site in archive.org has a few other random bits that we did that didn't make it through to the 'new' site. Needless to say I doubt there is going to be much in the way of Thermite or Angle Grinders here but I do have several projects coming up that might make it on to here. ...
